BEFORE
A global manufacturer of construction machines has been using a two-pallet system in the assembly line to manage specific compounds. The assembly line workers inform procurement when the first pallet is empty, so the procurement department can order a new full pallet to the assembly line from the subcontractor. As it is a 24/7 site, what may sometimes happen is that the workers assume the procurement has already been informed and then a close call occurs when the line nearly runs out of the compounds. This also causes the subcontractor to struggle with fast production and deliveries.

AFTER
Instead of two pallets, the manufacturer uses only one pallet in the production line but with skids under it. The subcontractor receives an automatic message when only 50 % of the components are left and is able to replenish it in optimal time. Production workers do not need to remember to inform the stock level to procurement and the size of the stock is reduced as there is no more need for a safety stock. This leaves more valuable space for production work.
